Woeful Shooting Costs Wolverines

A painful
15-69 performance from the field resulted in 37 points for the Ellwood
Boys Wednesday Night as they fell to New Brighton 61-37. A two
point second quarter hurt the Wolverines as they entered halftime
trailing 26-11 and would never get closer. Chas Roth was the lone
double-digit scorer for Ellwood City, registering 10 points on 4-19
shooting. Chris Weisz and Mike Sacco connected on three pointers
in a losing effort for the Wolverines. With all the Wolverine
missed shots in the contest, New Brighton gobbled up the boards
resulting in three players gaining double-digit boards for the victors
including D.J. Pearson who finished with 15 rebounds to go along with 17
points. The Wolverines Boys (3-19, 0-11 Section 2-AAA) next travel
to Blackhawk Friday night for Section Play.
Riverside Panthers

Jason Kolesar
topped 1,000 career points and the Riverside Boys basketball team topped
Neshannock 64-35 Friday Night at Riverside. Kolesar led the Panthers
with 21 points while Jake Wickline added 11 points and six assists.
Junior Shane Rusnock had a great all around game, contributing 8 rebounds
and 6 assists to his point total. Riverside stretched its lead to over
30 points over the Lancers (5-9, 2-5 Section 2-AA) in the third quarter in
route to their easy Section 2-AA victory. Riverside (15-1, 7-0 Section
2-AA) next travels to Laurel for section play Tuesday Night.
Offense Hard to Come By
for Wolverines

In a game
that saw the Wolverine Boys connect only ten field goals and not see a
player score double digits, the Beaver Bobcats mustered just enough offense
to take home a victory. Cory Diamond led all scorers with 16 points
and added nine rebounds for the Bobcats who outlasted the Wolverines 40-29
Friday night. The game remained tight through three quarters, but
Beaver (7-8, 2-5 Section 2-AAA) went on a crucial 13-3 run in the fourth
quarter the seal the victory. Mike Sacco led the Wolverines (3-13, 0-7
Section 2-AAA) with seven points. The Wolverine Boys next host
Ambridge Tuesday night in section play.
Early Lead Fall Apart

The Ellwood
City girls basketball team (3-9,0-7 in Section 2-AAA) hosted Ambridge
(7-6,5-2 in Section 2-AAA) Thursday night, and held the led for more than
halfway thru the game, until the Bridger's scored the last seven points of
the third period. Ambridge would go in to score 24 more points to upend the
Lady Wolverines 61-42. The Ellwood City forward Michelle Nocera led the
girls with 15 points, while Ashley Washington contributed 11 points, with
one long ball, also reaching double figures was Ashley's sister Alyse with
10 points on the night. The Girls next hosts Sharpsville "a Class AA
District 10 school" in an exhibition game Saturday at noon.
Riverside Vs. Beaver
Falls, Hits the hardwood

The Lady
Panthers faced off against the Beaver Falls Tigers Thursday night in what
would turn out to be a long night for both teams. The Riverside girls came
into this game holding down the number 1 spot in Section 2-AA, as Beaver
Fall held onto that number 2 spot, but Beaver Falls would leave with a share
of first place. Beaver Falls hit their first 9-of-14 shots while Riverside
managed only to knock down one three pointer and a basket from the foul
line. Heading into the second quarter the lady panthers trailed 20-4, and
where still behind heading into the locker room 35-19. Coming out in the
second half Riverside made a game of things by going on two scoring drives
resulting in a 12-0 run for the lady panthers, but it was to little to late
as the tigers held on for a 69-59 victory over the lady panthers. Riverside
was led by senior Samantha Perkins who finished with 21 points, and 10
rebounds, as junior Amy Gatnarek finished with 15 points and 10 boards. Next
for the lady panthers (10-6,5-2 in Section 2-AA) they travel to Hickory
Township to take on the Laurel Spartans at 7:30 Monday night.
Four-Headed Monster Push Panther's Unbeaten Mark

Combining for
53 of Riverside's 57 points Tuesday Night, Jason Kolesar, Jake Wickline,
Shane Rusnock, and Mason Marion all reache double figures in the Panthers
victory over winless Laurel, 57-39. Kolesar nearly posted a
double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds while Wickline (14 points),
Rusnock (12 points) and Marion (10 points) all chipped in during the game
that featured the Panthers jump out to an early 18-5 cushion.
Riverside Boys (6-0, 2-0 Section 2-AA) next host Ringgold in an exhibition
game Wednesday.
Ellwood City Boys Pay Toll Against Bridgers

The Ellwood
City Wolverines gave plenty to the Bridgers Tuesday night, resulting in a
66-47 defeat that pushed the Boys Section mark to 0-2. The Wolverines
committed over twenty turnovers and let a nine-point half-time deficit swell
in the second half. Chas Roth finished with 12 points and Mike Sacco
scored 10 points for the Wolverines while Frank Unis contributed a
double-double for Ambridge (3-2, 1-1 Section 2-AAA). Unis scored 16
points and grabbed 10 rebounds and three other Bridgers scored double
figures. The Wolverine Boys next host Quigley Catholic in an
exhibition game Wednesday.
Center Girls Pull Away in Second Half

Trailing only
by two points at halftime, thanks in large part to a monster first half from
Ashley Washington, the Lady Wolverines failed to stick around in the second
half and dropped a 57-45 decision to the Center Trojans (3-3, 1-1 Section
2-AAA) Monday Night. Ashley Washington led all scorers with 21 points
and Alex Capalbo and Michelle Nocera both contributed 10 points apiece for
the Wolverines. Ellwood City Girls (2-3, 0-2 Section 2-AAA) next
travel to Hopewell to battle the Vikings Thursday night.
RHS Girls Stuff the Spartans

Scoring a
single point in the second quarter, eight points in a half, or 21 points in
a basketball game will not win you many games. It wasn't the case for
Laurel Monday night as the Riverside Panthers blew out the Spartans 57-21 in
section play. Riverside Girls held Laurel (3-2, 1-1 Section 2-AA) to
six field goals the entire contest and were led offensively by Leah Prisuta
who scored 13 points. Samantha Perkins added 10 points for the Lady
Panthers. Riverside, who led 50-12 after three quarters, tested the
charity strip 43 times in the contest, connecting on 25 free throws.
Riverside Girls (4-1, 2-0 Section 2-AA) next travel to Neshannock for
section play Thursday evening.
Late Comeback Pushes Panthers Record to 5-0

Stifling
defense and a nine-point swing in the fourth quarter propelled the Panthers
Boys to a 39-35 defeat of Neshannock Friday night in each teams Section 2-AA
opener. The Panthers defense held Neshannock (1-3 overall) to only 2
points in the fourth quarter. Jake Wickline led all scorers with 15
points and Jason Kolesar was the only other player to reach double figures
with 10 points for Riverside. The Panther Boys next host Laurel
Tuesday Night.
Wolverines Drop Section Opener

Beaver jumped
out to an early 14-9 lead Friday Night and by the final horn had their lead
swell to the final margin of 56-39. The Wolverines (1-3 overall)
leading scorers managed only ten points apiece and the Wolverines managed
only 4 points of offense the entire third quarter. Chris Weisz
connected on three 3-point field goals in route to a 10 point effort while
Mike Sacco joined Weisz with 10 points in the contest. The Beaver
Bobcats (4-1 overall) were led by Cory Diamond who scored 18 points.

Double-Double Fuels Riverside Girls

The Riverside
Panthers Girls held off a late surge by Beaver Falls and captured their
section opener Thursday evening 66-53 on the road in Beaver Falls. The
Lady Panther (3-1 overall) were again led by a double-double from Amy
Ganarek, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Three other
Panthers reached double figures: Leah Prisuta (13 points), Kessi Osborne (12
points), and Samantha Perkins (10 points). The Lady Panthers next host
Laurel in Section 2-AA play Monday evening.
Ambridge Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat

After jumping
out to an early, first quarter lead, the Wolverine Girls saw the tides turn
and Ambridge run away with what became a 69-48 final score. Ambridge
guard Kiara Brown scored 33 points to help the Bridgers overcome an early
15-12 deficit. Alyse Washington led the Wolverines with 17 points
while Ashley Washington finished with nine points. The sisters
combined for three 3-pointers. Wolverine Alex Capalbo contributed 11
points and 13 rebounds in the contest. The Lady Wolverines (2-2
overall) next host Center in Section 2-AAA play at home on Monday.
Wildcat Scores 40, Shenango Defeats EC in Four Overtimes

The Shenango
Wilcats outlasted the Ellwood City Wolverines in four overtimes, 101-97,
Wednesday Night in Shenango. The Wilcats Rich Gaston scored 40 points
to lead all scorers in a game that featured five players top twenty points
and 21 three-point field goals. Chas Roth finished with 27 points to
lead the Wolverines. Mike Sacco (26 points) and Anthony Sainato (22
points) also eclipsed the twenty-point mark for the Wolverines in the
contest. Chris Weisz connected on 5 three-pointers for Ellwood City
(1-2) who overcame a six-point, fourth quarter deficit to force the initial
overtime. The Wolverines Boys open up Section play Friday Night at
home against Beaver.
Panther Boys Make it Back-to-Back Victories

The Riverside
Panthers battled through a tough Tuesday Night contest, the second
consecutive nightly basketball game, and pushed their overall record to 4-0
with a 54-48 victory on the road at Union. Jake Wickline scored 19
points, Shane Rusnock added 16, and Mason Marion chipped in with 10 points
to lead the Panthers. The Panthers, who missed two starters in action
last night due to injury, travel to Neshannock Friday night for their
Section 2-AA opener.
Wolverine Girls Head into Section Play Victorious

The Wolverine
Girls are on the right-side of .500, although early in the season, as a
result of a 59-35 home victory over Aliquippa Tuesday night. Ashley
Washington scored 17 points to lead the Wolverines, who next travel to
Ambridge for their Section 2-AAA opener Thursday night.
