Steeler tightend Matt
Spaeth is used to leaving his feet to haul in touchdown passes for
quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, having caught three touchdown passes in
2007, but Friday night the 6'7" 270 pound Spaeth left his feet for another
sports related crowd pleaser -- a thunderous dunk. Spaeth was one of
seven Pittsburgh Steelers who visited Lincoln High School for a charity
basketball game against Lincoln High School's Caring Team.
Spaeth was joined by
linebacker James Harrison, defensive linemen Chris Hoke and Brett Keisel
(who also brought the house down with a thunderous dunk), tight end John
Dekker, safety Mike Lorello, and formed wide receiver Louis Lipps.
At halftime of the charity
game, Lipps appeared at center court, clad in his black and gold basketball
uniform, and began a memorable chant for the late Myron Cope. The
nearly packed gymnasium followed his lead and the gold terrible towels began
waving -- just like at a Steelers home game.
In addition to a handful
of Steelers dunks (and missed dunks), Lincoln High School ceramics teacher
Raquel Wratney got the toss one down for the Caring Team. Wratney
needed the assistance of Pro Bowler James Harrison, who hoisted Wratney high
over his shoulders for the jam to the delight of the crowd.
The charity game was
preceded by a game between the Lincoln High School Girls Basketball team and
member of the Lincoln High School football team. The event raised
funds that will benefit programs to provide health care for working families
who can't afford health insurance, and grief counseling for children and
teens.
The Steelers will visit
Riverside High School Wednesday Night for charity basketball action against
the Panthers.
