111 kids attended a free basketball clinic
held this past Saturday morning by Word Alive Church. The clinic took
place at the Ellwood City High School Boys' Gymnasium where the children
learned to dribble, pass, shoot, and defend at seven drill stations.
At the conclusion of the event there was a
shootout between the coaches and each kid was awarded a gift bag which
contained a basketball bible, a bible that had quotes and stories from
Christian basketball stars, a t-shirt, and gift certificates.
The event is called
September Slam '07 and is one of two basketball clinics Thru Youth, a
Ministry of Word Alive Church, plan on holding each year.
Coordinators of the event
were
Alan Marsh and Anthony Ovial, both members of Word Alive Church. Alan
is the Children's Church Pastor and has worked at Word Alive Church for over
15 years after attaining his education degree. Anthony is a recent
college graduate with a teaching degree and a strong background in
basketball and the game's fundamentals as he is currently a PIAA basketball
official.
Thru Youth created this
outreach clinic to provide children of Ellwood City and the surrounding
areas a chance to participate in an event that will not only strengthen
their self-esteem but teach them positive life skills.
