Ellwood City School Board Meeting
August
4, 2008
ECO
Staff -- Laure Cioffi, senior journalist
ELLWOOD CITY – There will be a
class of preschoolers at the North Side School this fall.
The Ellwood City Area School Board met last week and approved an agreement
with Lawrence County Social Services, who will be offering the class for up
to 20 pupils under the Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts program.
Dr. Alfonso Angelucci, assistant school superintendent, said LCSS will pay
the salaries of the teacher and an aide, and all supplies. The district will
only be providing the space, he said.
Angelucci said the district was interested in the preschool program because
it is important to help the youngsters prepare for kindergarten.
“It’s rare these days to have a kindergarten student with no preschool
experience. Something like this program makes it more accessible,” he said.
Nancy Welker, director of education and employment services for LCSS, said
this will be the fourth preschool program funded through Pennsylvania’s
Pre-K Counts in Lawrence County.
LCSS received funding for the program last year and started programs in
December at the Ellwood City Early Learning Center, the former West End
School, and the Ben Franklin Early Learning Center in New Castle.
These classes are in addition to the Head Start Program, which is also
administered by LCSS.
Welker said the Pre-K Counts classes are similar to those offered through
LCSS’s Head Start Program.
She noted that the family income guidelines required for Head Start
enrollment do not apply to the Pre-K Counts program.
Welker said they still have five openings for the Pre-K Counts class at
North Side. They will cap enrollment at 20. There are also four spots still
open for the Pre-K Counts class at the Ellwood Early Learning Center. Anyone
interested should contact LCSS at (724) 658-7671.
