Earth’s Birthday-April 22nd 1969
April 23, 2008
Of course we are all familiar with Earth day, but did you know it originally
began on April 22nd, 1969? Obviously, that doesn’t mean the Earth was
created April 22nd, 1969, but simply that the tradition began thirty-nine
years ago...(find out more about Earth Day)
A man whose name was John McConnell created this popular tradition. Mr.
McConnell was a peace activist with a life-long passion for peace, religion,
and science. He decided to take action in preserving the Earth when he began
working in a plastic factory. Realizing how much pollution manufacturing
plastic produced his studies in ecology grew.
Earth day is still celebrated thirty-nine years later in various ways. At a
college located in Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, they
celebrate Earth day by not using plastic lunch trays. What a unique way! It
doesn’t take much to participate in the celebration of Earth day, for
example, not littering is a very interesting way to celebrate.
Here in Ellwood City, Pa, people celebrated Earth day on Saturday April 19th
in Ewing Park. They had booths set up where you could set a butterfly free
or perhaps make a nice bowl out of ceramics. This was a nice way to show
children and adults that the Earth does matter.
Man-made problems account for many of the reasons why the Earth is being
“destroyed.” Here are a few example of what exactly hurts the Earth’s
ecosystem.
● Littering, throwing
trash that cannot be dissolved into the ground
●
Use of too much gas from cars
●
Over usage of hairspray
●
Possibly include emissions or industrial bi-products (C02)
Those are just a few of the reasons why global warming is occurring. If we
would all just be precautious and not pollute the Earth, we would be able to
enjoy its wonders much longer.
Another thing we can do to celebrate Earth day everyday is to recycle. Next
time you’re drinking your soda, don’t just throw it in the trash. Set aside
a couple bins outside your house and start throwing your aluminum cans in
there. Some companies even offer money for recycling; it might not be a
great amount, but it’s a small reward for preserving the Earth. You can also
take a shorter shower to preserve water; on a nice day walk instead of
drive; and turn off lights and electronics when not in use. These are all
ways to celebrate Earth day every day. Just remember, it doesn’t have to be
April 22nd to preserve the Earth. |
