Giorno Delle Forze Armate
May 14, 2008
Unless
you are someone that can read Italian, Giorno Delle Forze Armate, translates to
“Day Of Forces Armed” or better known in English as National Armed Forces Day.
The holiday is celebrated on different days depending on your country of
residence. The United States celebrates National Armed Forces Day on the third
Saturday in.
This National holiday was first celebrated
in the United States in 1949 and was created to consolidate the observation days
of the branches of the military. These branches include the Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard
There are a number of ways NAFD is
celebrated including, parades, open houses, receptions, airs shows, and picnics.
The fun begins on the third Saturday of May but due to the often hectic training
schedules of the military, many may celebrate this holiday over any period in
the month of May. The US Air Force Base Exchange located within the Greater
Pittsburgh International Airport in Coraopolis, PA, kicked off the local
celebration with an air show this past weekend.

Not only does the United States recognize this holiday but also several other
nations, including the aforementioned Italian speaking county, will hold an
annual Armed Forces Day. Although they may be celebrated on different days
throughout the world, the purpose of the celebration still remains the same.
