On Thursday, May 3, ECPE
Club held their first Family Wellness Day, for the families of students in
grades seven and eight, from 6 to 8 pm. Cindy Cirelli, a teacher at
Lincoln High School, opened the evening with a presentation on healthy
eating habits. Including recipes for healthy snacks, Cirelli also
suggested using http://www.mypyramid.gov to students to track the amount of
exercise and food in each food group they should have each day.
“Learning to make healthy
food choices is the first step towards life long good health,” Cirelli
advised.
Lisa Leonberg and John
DiBuano, Lincoln physical education teachers and founders of ECPE Club, had
several stations for the students and their families to enjoy, which
included bowling, step aerobics, a treadmill, jumping rope, mini-volleyball,
scooter soccer, and dancing.
Students could not wait to
participate in their favorite activities. “Dancing, I can't wait for
that,” Athena Fusco stated. However, Jackie Metcalfe and Kelsey
Edinger both enjoyed bowling best.
ECPE Club, which is nearing
the end of their first year at Lincoln, hope to make this a monthly event.
They would also like to expand the ages of the students invited.
Sometime in the future, they would also like to make the club available to
students at Riverside.
With teen obesity doubling
over the last twenty years, ECPE Club aims to help students by organizing
physical fitness themed trips and providing students with a place to
exercise after school.
