Did you know that one in two Pennsylvanians suffer from
arthritis and that over 300,000 children are affected by this disability?
The second annual New Castle Arthritis Walk took place this past Saturday,
May 12, to help raise funds and awareness for arthritis. The Arthritis Walk
is the Arthritis Foundation’s signature event that takes place in various
communities nationwide. Saturday’s walk was held at New Castle’s Pearson
Park. Walkers could choose from either a one-mile or a three-mile walk, with
a team or individually in honor of a friend for family member.
Each year doctors from the Children’s Hospital in
Pittsburgh select a child for each location to be the events honoree. The
2007 Arthritis Walk child honoree was two-year old Isabella Bruer of New
Galilee. Last year at the first Arthritis Walk in New Castle, Noah Jones
was the child honoree at the signature event that rose close to $12,000 in
donations.
The selected child honoree has a large, personalized
banner at the event in which participants in the walk may leave
inspirational messages or sign with words of encouragement. There were also
treats and refreshments at the shelter at Pearson Park and the event held a
Chinese Auction later in the day. After the walk was over there was a
question and answer segment with some of the parents.
Other Arthritis Walks will take place throughout
Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio on dates ranging into late May and
early June. If you are interested in raising awareness and funds for
Arthritis by participating in an upcoming Arthritis Walk, please visit
