1st Farmers Market - Went Better Than Expected.
July 14, 2008

ELLWOOD CITY -- Dave and Nicole Sperdute didn't know what to expect when they rolled into the parking lot along Beaver Avenue for their first farmer's market.

It went better than expected.

"We weren't really planning on the crowd we had," Dave Sperdute said. "We sold all 30 head of cabbage in an hour."

All the zucchini went too, said the Mount Jackson farmer who estimates there were more than 100 people at his stand by 10 a.m.

"It was very well received. They were appreciative of the opportunity to bring it back," Sperdute said of the buyers.

The Sperdute's invited friend Stephanie Matvey of Edinburg to set up too.

Matvey said her garlic, onions and zucchini also sold out in the first hour.

But by 10 a.m. she was still had flowers and herbs to sell.

"It's still early in the season. We'll have green beans, tomatoes and peppers later in the season," she said.

The Sperdutes say they will also have corn and late in the season they will have watermelon and cantaloupe.

Dave Sperdute said all produce is picked the night before to ensure it's fresh.

Both farmers say they intend to return this Saturday and make the farmer's market a weekly trek. The weekly sale of vegetables will be in addition to the biweekly sale of cheese that has been ongoing for years in the Beaver Avenue parking lot.
