October 23, 2009

Ellwood City Police are advising residents to lock their vehicles after a string of thefts from cars on the north side and other parts of the borough.

Lt. Dave Kingston said they believe all of the thefts are related. All of the cars were broken into sometime overnight from Oct. 20 to Oct. 21 with most occurring in the Hazel Avenue area.

Kingston said someone siphoned nearly a half a tank of gasoline from a car at 238 Hazel Ave., owned by Michael Buzzelli

Jumper cables were taken from a car at 515 Hazel Ave. owned by John Matrangol and another car at 513 Hazel Ave., was also entered, but police did not have the details of what was taken from that car.

On nearby Clyde Street, a faceplate for a Sony stereo was taken from a car owned by Nicole Whalen and a garage was broken into at 532 Line Ave. and a gas can was stolen, police said.

In that same time frame, a GPS system was taken from a car in Ellport parked at 245 Portersville Road and owned by John Cortez.

Thefts were also reported at 216 Short St. where an XM Satellite Radio receiver was taken from a car owned by David Steffler and at 109 Fountain Ave., Jennifer Prinkey reported her car was ransacked and $2 in change and her radio faceplate was also taken.

Police said sometime from 5:40 to 6:30 a.m. a purse was taken from Megan Gardner’s car parked at 1107 Center Ave. Police said they found the purse with the money missing near the intersection of Beaver Avenue and 12th Street.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call the Ellwood City Police.
