Math competition attracts 131 pupils
May 20, 2009

ELLWOOD CITY -- There were 131 pupils competing in this year’s Math 24 Challenge hosted by the Ellwood City Area Schools.

The sixth annual competition was held May 1 at Holy Redeemer School.

Students from each school in Lawrence County, with the addition of Riverside, were invited to the competition.

Math department chair Marjorie Atkins, physics teacher Rebecca Brown, and gifted coordinators Jonica Walters and Laura Adams are instrumental in organizing the event each year.

The competition involves four students in a match, racing to see who can find the correct equation using four given numbers, which always equal 24.

This competition is designed to replace competitions previously held by Suntex, the manufacturer of the cards, who have since abandoned their local and state competitions. At that time, Ellwood City boasted the distinction of having Steven Strutt, a present senior, qualify for competition in Harrisburg at the state competition.

McDonald's and ESB bank provided support for the event.

High scorers from each grade follow:

Grade seven and eight high scorer was Donnie Adams of Mohawk with 842 points.

Grade six high scorer was Andrew Ferrucci of Mohawk with 707 points.

Cayla Sudano of Ellwood City placed first in the fifth grade division with 547 points. And Frankie Conti of Mohawk was high scorer in the fourth grade division with 425 points.

Photos submitted to EllwoodCity.org by Jonica Walters show winners in each grade division. Winners are from left to right in first through fourth places.
