Ellwood City fire reports
May 20, 2009

ELLWOOD CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT

Reports released for May 11 to May 17.

· Monday, 5/11/09 at 10:37 a.m., answered alarm for wires down on Second Street at Franklin Avenue.

Eight firefighters responded with three vehicles and found that the wires were cable and telephone wires. The Ellwood City Power and Light removed the wires. Firefighters were back in service in 15 minutes.

· Tuesday, 5/12/09 at 7:22 p.m. Silent call for a smoke alarm at 510 Crescent Ave., the Ellwood City Area Public Library.

Six firefighters responded to the library for a smell of smoke call. Firefighters found a defective light ballast as the source of the odor.

· Wednesday, 5/13/09 Alarm to assist the police department with ladders at 409 Bell Ave.

Eleven firefighters responded to a request for ladders at 409 Bell Ave. The police department was investigating an incident and needed to access the second floor.

· Thursday, 5/14/09 at 1:44 a.m. Alarm to assist Wayne Township at a vehicle fire on Bridge Street Extension.

Fourteen firefighters responded with four vehicles to a SUV fire on Bridge Street Extension one-fourth mile north of the Del Mar Golf Course. The vehicle was extensively damaged.

· Thursday 5/14/09 at 2:45 p.m. Silent call to 200 Hazen Ave. for a smoke detector noise.

One firefighter checked a residence at 200 Hazen Ave. for a noise from a smoke detector. The smoke detector was outdated and replaced by the firefighter. The firefighter also checked a carbon monoxide detector, which was also outdated and replaced. The house was checked for carbon monoxide but none was found.

· Friday 5/15/09 at 11:20 a.m. Silent call for a gas leak at 516 Franklin Ave.

While firefighters were installing smoke detectors at 516 Franklin Ave. they detected a gas odor in the basement and called Columbia Gas to investigate.

· Friday 5/15/09 at 12:10 a.m. Alarm for smoke in the are of McDonald’s.

Three firefighters responded to a call for smoke in the vicinity of 15 Fifth St., but were unable to locate any smoke in the area.

· Saturday 5/16/09 at 7:11 p.m. Alarm to assist at Crescent Place.

Eight firefighters responded to Crescent Place to assist residents after a bathtub overflowed on the second floor causing water to go into apartments on both the second and first floors. Firefighters assisted residents in clearing water from the apartments.

· Saturday 5/16/09 at 8:23 p.m. Alarm for motor vehicle accident on Woodside Ave. at Deemer’s Bend.

Nine firefighters responded to a one-vehicle crash at 952 Woodside Ave. when an SUV crashed and overturned. The occupant was not injured. The vehicle slid into an Ellwood City Power and Light pole and also lodged against a gas meter on the property. Columbia Gas checked the meter and line before the vehicle was removed. Ellwood City Power and Light stood by in case power needed to be turned off while the vehicle was removed.

· Sunday, 5/17/09 at 6:50 p.m. Silent call to assist with a child vehicle crash on Sixth Street.

Firefighters responded when a child could not stop his bicycle and hit a vehicle on Sixth Street at Park Avenue.
