Lions Club honors member; student
May 19, 2009

The Ellwood City Lions Club recently honored one its own and the organization’s April student of the month.

Gene Gaul of Ellwood City was given the Melvin Jones Award, the highest honor any Lions Club member can receive. Gaul is only the second member of the local Lions Club to receive this honor. The first was Don Parker.

The award is given for years of humanitarian service and is named for Lions Clubs International founder Melvin Jones. As a Melvin Jones Fellow, Gaul’s name will be added to a list of all people in the program and the list is continuously shown on an electronic billboard in the Recognition Room of the Lions Club International Headquarters.

The group also recently honored Lincoln senior Sara Schombert as the April Student of the Month.

Sara, the daughter of Kevin and Renee Schombert, is planning to attend Baldwin-Wallace College in the fall to study biology and neuroscience.

Among her achievements are being a member of the National Honor Society, a vacation bible school teacher for two years, chairperson of the Relay for Life Team and acting as CEO for the winning company (team) during Lincoln High school’s Business week.

Sara received a $100 scholarship along with the honor of being the group’s student of the month.
