Artwork from 91 Ellwood City Area School District pupils will be on display at the 2009 Very Special Arts Exhibits in Grove City.

The exhibit is planned for May 12 to May 22 at the Pew Fine Arts Center Gallery on the campus of Grove City College. The show is sponsored by the Midwestern Intermediate Unit and includes art from 27 schools in Lawrence, Mercer and Butler counties.

Artwork was submitted by pupils in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

A reception for the artists is planned for May 17 at the gallery. The gallery is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

“Our artwork stands apart from all the other districts,” said Christine Gibson, elementary principal at the Ellwood City Area School District.

Gibson told school board members that work from Ellwood City pupils is being used on the art show poster and other materials printed for the show.

The school board conducted the following business at Thursday’s meeting:

· Appointed Kirk Lape, Lincoln High School assistant principal, the interim principal effective May 15. Principal Joe Mancini has been appointed interim assistant to the superintendent since the resignation of Dr. Alfonso Angelucci.

· Set the following ½ day Act 80 days for the 2009-2010 school year: Sept. 4, Nov. 19, Feb. 12, May 5, May 6 and June 2. Early dismissals for Lincoln High School for final exams will be May 28 and June 1.

· Approved the constitution for the revival of the Lincoln High School Y-Teens for the 2009-2010 school year.

· The school board appointed Philip Weiner Company to audit the district’s records for the 2008-09 fiscal year.

· Granted exempt status to the land and building located at 407 Lawrence Ave. owned by the Ellwood City Public Library. Taxes in the amount of $547.12 were exonerated.

· Added the following to the substitute list: Ashley Baur of Sewickley and Jennifer Wilfong of Beaver Falls, elementary; Kyli Gorley of New Castle (secondary math), Lee White (secondary math), Kaira Petro (secondary English), Jennifer Sitter of Erie (secondary French).

· Approved a list of summer custodial help pending all necessary clearances: Lenore Ewing, Sandy Reed, Pat Meyer, Patti Hall, Lynn Leavens, Marilynn Gottuso, Loretta Barry, Michelle Winters, Tom Natale. Substitutes are Wade Eidenmiller, Evan Ottaviani and Wes Eidenmiller.

· Accepted the following resignations: Raylene Italiano, Lincoln High secretary, for purposes of retirement effective July 31, 2009; Rachel Lunn, Lincoln High School teacher, as Envirothon sponsor for 2008-09; Lori Wimer, Lincoln High School teacher, as commencement speaker coach; Richard DiFrischia, sixth grade teacher at Walnut Ridge School, for purposes of retirement effective June 12, 2009.

· Named the following sponsors: Jonica Walters, Envirothon Club sponsor 2008-09; Lori Hudeck, commencement speaker coach for 2008-09 commencement; Melissa Pigza as Y-Teens Club sponsor for 2009-2010.

· School board member Kathy Pansera was appointed treasurer for the school district for the 2009-10 school year beginning July 1.

· Richard Zarone, school business administrator, was appointed school board secretary for four years ending June 30, 2013.

· Approved the following facility requests: Erica Schry, Gold Medal Gymnastics, for use of the large gymnasium for a gymnastics meet, Feb. 20 and Feb. 21; Sue Malcolm, on behalf of the Ellwood City Elks Club, the Lincoln parking lot for a bicycle rally on June 6 for students in the Ellwood City Area School District.

· Approved the following student intern/teacher placements:
Jena Colaberdino of Beaver (Carlow College) will begin her internship assignment on Aug. 24 under the supervision of Chris Bluedorn, LHS guidance counselor.
April Scurdere of New Wilmington assigned to Frank Keally, math teacher, and Kenneth Cloonan of Franklin under the supervision of Mandy Long, French teacher, both are from Westminster College.
Monica Wright (Geneva College) of Portersville assigned to special education with Deanna McMillan at Hartman from Sept. 1 through Oct. 16 and elementary education teaching assignment from Oct. 19 to Dec. 11 with Sherry Shearer at Perry Elementary.

· Approved the following field trip requests:
Melissa Pigza, Lincoln High School teacher, taking newspaper students in grade 9-12 to Kennywood Park on May 28.
Craig Mills and David Ialongo, North Side teachers, taking students to Laurel Caverns to pan for gemstones June 1.
Marsha Kosanovich, Lincoln High School teacher, taking the eighth grade class to Kennywood Park on May 20.

· Joseph Mancini, acting assistant to the superintendent, appointed compliance officer, district LEA and homeless liaison representative for the district.

· Approved foreign exchange students Carolina Passa Pompilio of Brazil and Jessica Gassdorf of Germany. They will be living with Jonica and Doug Walters of Ellwood City.

· Approved an agreement with Cray Youth and Family Services to provide one slot for an elementary intervention program at an annual cost of $9,835.20.
