EllwoodCity.org presented its two ‘Lucky Loser’s’ from the recent Holy Redeemer Super Bingo with their winnings prizes of $50.00. Lucia Paglia and Jimmy Valentino participated in Holy Redeemer’s Super Bingo on March 7th and submitted their losing Bingo cards into the Lucky Loser drawing. Jimmy Valentino is pictured with Bob Phillips, EllwoodCity.org Marketing Manager. The “Lucky Loser” drawing was sponsored by Posies by Patti.
Traffic jam on Koppel Bridge

PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists that repairs on the Koppel Bridge that carries Route 351 over the Beaver River in the Borough of Koppel will occur starting Monday, March 15, weather permitting.
Traffic may be delayed and backed up due to the alternating single lane of traffic on the bridge from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
PennDOT workers are repairing the steel on the bridge, and work is expected to conclude April 30, 2010.

11:20 AM - During Monday’s agenda setting meeting for the Ellwood City School Board, auditorium renovations were discussed again, and some estimates were tossed around; however, last night’s meeting revealed no further action on renovations will be taken at the current time.

The numbers discussed during this month’s meetings were possible new seating estimated at $232,000 and new auditorium rigging for the curtains estimated at $7,000.

10:35 AM - The Ellwood City boys and girls varsity basketball head coach positions are intact for another year as voted by the school board during last night’s meeting.
Jason Bumblis, the Wolverines head coach, will be back for another year, hoping for a continued improvement during his fourth year as head varsity coach.

Will boy shooter be tried as an adult?

9:31 AM - A hearing is set to resume today on whether the 12-year-old New Castle boy can be tried as an adult on charges of murdering his father’s pregnant fiancee.
Jordan Brown was 11 when he allegedly shot 26-year-old Kenzie Marie Houk, who was pregnant at the time, in their New Galilee farmhouse in February 2009.

Zoning fees hot topic at Township meeting

8:50 AM - There was a packed house last night during the monthly supervisor’s meeting for North Sewickley Township, and many were there to chime in on the not-so-favorable zoning fees.
“You are driving businesses away,” said a woman in attendance last night. “You should be focusing on bringing businesses in to the township instead of keeping them out.”
The zoning fees that have the citizens from North Sewickley Township heated are part of a fee schedule adopted by the supervisors back on January 20 – and according to the supervisors, is not anything out of the ordinary.

Working longer puts women with post-menopausal osteoporosis at a higher risk of fracture because their busy lives often keep them from focusing on their bone health, says JoAnn V. Pinkerton, MD, medical director of the Midlife Health Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Virginia.
“They aren’t doing what they need to do to manage their osteoporosis – like taking medication, calcium and vitamin D, and strength training,” says Dr. Pinkerton.

10:40 AM - It is amazing how a baby, whose time on Earth was limited to just 1 year and 18 days, could have so much significance on the lives of many.
On Saturday, the significance Gavin Myers had will be easily recognized by masses of bald heads during St. Baldricks’s fundraiser to help conquer children's cancer. In loving memory of Gavin, almost 100 people will be “shaving the way to conquer kids’ cancer.”
Gavin Myers, son of Rick and Shannon Myers of Wayne Township, passed away on June 27, 2008, 18 days after his first birthday, from his battle with stage 4 neuroblastoma.

Altmire continues to urge terrorists out of courts

8:31 AM - Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04) said Monday that he is encouraged by reports that White House officials are considering trying suspected 9/11 terrorist Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators in military tribunals, as opposed to civilian courts.
Altmire has long insisted that these terrorists and other Guantanamo Bay detainees should not be tried in civilian courts in western Pennsylvania or anywhere else in the United States.
