Ellwood City is home to over
30 diversified industries, most having local controlling interest. Some of these companies' industrial
roots can be traced back to the late 1800s when Mr. Hartman, who owned
several mills in the nearby area, moved his iron and wire fence producing
mills to the land he had bought. Hartman originally purchased 550 acres,
dividing it into lots, which were in turn sold for about $100/acre. Soon,
Ellwood City had several mills, a foundry, Forge Company, steel
mill, and two glass manufacturers. Since then, the
city itself has grown into a "homeowners community" with about 82% of the
residents owning their own homes.
Ellwood City maintains numerous
playgrounds and a 14 acre park with lighted baseball fields, tennis courts,
swimming pool and picnic shelters. Nearby Moraine and McConnell's Mills
State Parks offer numerous recreational opportunities, from a 7-mile
bike trail to a class-3 whitewater rafting stream.

Pictured Left is a
photo taken in July 1939 of the Workingman's
Social Club, an active and popular band at the time of the photo.
The band was said to have played for various activities at the club,
then located on Second Street near Division Avenue, and for club
get-togethers at Rustic Park. It also appeared for various other
events, including parades throughout the area and in Pittsburgh.
The club is no longer in existence.
Below is part of the accompanying story
that was published along with the band photo in the Ellwood City Ledger
in 1939:
"The photograph of the Workingmen's Social Club was taken at the
conclusion of a parade staged Saturday afternoon in honor of the Manos
theater. The uniforms for this newly formed organization were
purchased and donated by Harry Bondurant, manager of the Manos theater.
At an early date the band will give a concert from the stage of the
Manos giving the music lovers of Ellwood City an opportunity to enjoy
and appreciate the high accomplishments of the band. Many readers
will recall the old Shelby Social Club band which won many honors and
distinctions throughout the state. The Workingmen's Social Club
band boasts of many musicians formerly connected with the old Shelby
band. The personnel of the W.M.S.C. band is made up of 30
musicians featuring all standard orchestra and band instruments.
Ralph Greco, president of the W.M.S.C. and Jimmy Peccerillo, vice
president, were instrumental in organizing the band and through their
efforts and hard work the W.M.S.C. are able to boast of a well organized
company of accomplished musicians."
